Prostate Cancer

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. During their lifetime, about one in seven men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Less aggressive forms, which often can only be monitored, must be distinguished from aggressive forms requiring appropriate treatment.

How can prostate cancer be detected?

The suspicion that prostate cancer might be present nowadays usually is derived from a blood test, the so-called PSA (prostate-specific antigen). Also, a hardening of the prostate during rectal examination may be suspicious. For further clarification, alta uro usually will perform an MRI of the prostate at one of our cooperation partners. However, the diagnosis of prostate cancer only can be made from a prostate biopsy. For a prostate biopsy, tiny pieces of tissue are removed from the prostate and looked at under a microscope. Alta uro performs this biopsy exclusively as a perineal fusion biopsy.

What treatment is required?

The form of treatment depends on the spread and aggressiveness of the cancer as well as the extent of comorbidities of the person affected. Basically, cancer that is limited to the prostate gland needs to be distinguished from cancer that has already spread in the body. Cancer limited to the prostate usually can be cured with local therapy such as surgery. In contrast, a systemic therapy with medications usually is required in case the tumour has spread to other organs.

What treatment for prostate cancer does Alta Uro offer?

At alta uro, we offer a very broad range of prostate cancer treatment. For cancer limited to the prostate , this includes:

  • Active surveillance: The cancer is less aggressive and regularly monitored by blood tests (PSA), imaging (MRI of the prostate) and fusion biopsy.
  • Focal therapy: With this innovative form of therapy, only the area of the prostate affected by cancer is treated. This treatment is offered as part of a clinical trial. More information can be found here
  • Radical prostatectomy: The removal of the prostate usually is done with the Da Vinci robotic system. The experts of alta uro use the state-of-the-art facility at Merian Iselin Clinic for their robot-assisted surgeries.
  • For locally advanced tumours: Open surgery with extended removal of lymph nodes or removal of tumours that have recurred in the lymph node (lymph node metastasis surgery).

If the tumor has already spread to the body, therapy with medication for hormone seprivation, for influencing the bone metabolism and possibly chemotherapy is required..
